As always on the first day of the New Year, 2017 in Terlingua started with the Pea-Off. The Pea-Off is a gathering of black-eyed pea cooks and aficionados, and really just anyone generally looking to have a good time while raising money for a local charity. This year’s beneficiary was Last Minute Low Budget Productions – our local theater group that puts on productions that can rival those of professional theater companies. The competition can be fierce, and turn in time is 2pm sharp. The samples to be judged are collected, and the pots of peas are put out on the table. For only $5, you get a bowl to load up with samplings of the various entries, some cornbread, and a spoon to eat it with. Music this year was provided by The Rafters, a local band from about 20 years ago which definitely has not lost it’s touch, and attendees danced and Hula Hooped to the music. A good time was had by all this afternoon, and starting the year with good food, friends, and music, all while raising money for a good cause is the best way to start the New Year. After an unbelievably hectic 2016, it was also a great way to reconnect with my friends and community. So, here’s to a fantastic 2017 filled with friends, fun, adventure, and whatever else you wish for the year.
