tmp_30655-Parade - Senora de Guanajuato 080816503017757Sometimes, the best parts of travel are unplanned, and today I had the pleasant surprise of stumbling into the middle of a local religious celebration. The silver mines of Guanajuato were some of the most productive in the world – producing great riches for Spain and its monarchy, and in 1557 as an expression of his gratitude, King Phillip II of Spain gifted a jewel encrusted statue of The Virgin Mary to the town. The statue resides in The Basilica de Nuestra Senora de Guanajuato near the Plaza de La Paz, and each year on August 9th its consecration is celebrated with religious processionals in which a replica of the statue is carried through the city on a bed of flowers. The processional included music, incense, prayers, and horseback riders as the people of Guanajuato joyously celebrated a special day in their history.
